CINCINNATI -- Tri-State native Heather Mitts and her U.S. women's soccer teammates won the gold medal in Athens. Heather Mitts, 26, is a defender on the U.S. women's soccer team that beat Brazil, 2-1 in overtime, WLWT News 5 reported. Mitts attended St. Ursula Academy, where she was a center midfielder on the 1993 statechampionship team, WLWT News 5's Joelle Girone reported. "I think it's something that came about in high school," former teammate Danielle Newman said. "She sort of developed a love for i(the game) and she just knew. The discipline here in the program and the tradition of the program, it started her in that area. She got a taste for it." Mitts then went on to play defender at the University of Florida, and was nominated for numerous awards, including the Herman Trophy for National Player of the Year, WLWT reported. Also, Mitts was the first soccer player to appear in FHM magazine when she posed for a five-page spread, and was voted sexiest player in the WUSA in 2001 by Playboy.com readers, WLWT reported. |
